The Container Recycling Institute found 85% of plastic water bottles end up in landfills. Also a concern, the byproducts from burning may be harmful to humans and the earth.
CORN BASED BOTTLE - FAQ's
Corntainer Corp of America is pleased to announce its introduction of its first corn based bottle: 0.5 liters (16.9 fl oz). this bottle has been produced exclusively for New Wave Enviro Products Inc. This corn starch plastic container is made from poyactide (“PLA”). Natureworks PLA is a unique polymer that behaves like P.E.T.( a petroleum based plastic) in the manufacturing process. PLA has good organoleptic characteristics and is excellent for food contact and related packaging applications.
IN TODAY’S WORLD OF RUNAWAY PETROLEUM PRICES AND LANDFILL OVERLOAD, PLA IS AN EXCELLENT OPTION FOR CONTAINERS.
WHY USE CONTAINERS MADE FROM PLA? The product is produced from a 100% renewable/sustainable resource; and is 100% recyclable/compostable.
WILL THE CONTAINER DEGRADE DURING NORMAL USE? Natureworks® PLA is actually compostable as opposed to biodegradable. This means that it takes specific conditions of heat and moisture for the bottle to degrade. These conditions are present in a commercial compost. However like P.E.T. plastic it may misshape or warp in high heat conditions like a closed car in the summer.
WILL THE WATER TASTE LIKE CORN? No, the bottle will not leach taste into the water.
HOW MUCH CORN IS USED TO MAKE THE BOTTLE? At a yield of 130 bushels per acre, about 47,000 bottles can be made from one acre of corn.
WHERE CAN I FIND A COMMERCIAL COMPOST? Go to your local municipality contacts.
HOW SHOULD I WASH THE BOTTLE? Wash the bottle with warm (not hot) water with white vinegar or baking soda. Do not place in a dishwasher.
ARE THERE ANY GMO PRODUCTS USED IN THE MANUFACTURING OF PLA? The manufacturer purchases dextrose from Cargill. Cargill buys a mixed stream of corn which may include either organic or genetically modified corn products in the mix. Even if the corn may have come from GMO seed, there is no genetic material present in the dextrose as it is destroyed in the manufacturing process. Neither Corntainer Corp nor New Wave Enviro Products Inc supports GMO products. New Wave Enviro Products Inc. contributes 3% of the gross profits from the sale of the bottle to Organic Farming Organizations.
